Solar Power Station vs Petrol Generator: What to Consider

For years the petrol generator has been the default answer to outages. Portable solar power stations offer a different trade-off, and the right choice depends on how you actually use power.

Running cost and fuel

A generator needs fuel for every hour of use, and fuel prices and availability can vary. A solar power station recharged from panels has no fuel cost for that energy, though it is limited by its stored capacity and the sunlight available.

Noise and indoor use

Generators produce noise and exhaust and must be run outdoors, away from windows. Battery-based stations operate without combustion, which makes them suitable for bedrooms and offices.

Where each fits

  • Short, predictable evening outages with modest loads suit a power station well.
  • Very heavy loads or long multi-day outages may still need a larger installed system or a hybrid approach.
  • Many households combine both, reserving the generator for exceptional demand.
